Author: Michael Dorris
Main Characters: Moss, his mother and father, Trouble, the tribe, the guests
The story is about a boy on the cusp of becoming a man. He is curious about things in an annoying way and is always concerned with life in relation to himself. He is upset that people won't answer his questions, especially about the guests. The time period is reminiscent of the Native Americans and the Pilgrims. The tribe is getting ready to host hungry guests for their annual fall feast. Moss is busy protesting his annoyance that the guests are coming and looking for someone in his family to help him understand why the guests are coming. In his haste, he announces that he is leaving for his alone trip today. No one tried to dissuade him, so he left. In meeting Trouble, a girl he heard about from the other side of the tribe, he became defiant and took off into the woods. His story is a good one. This is definitely a good book to read and learn from.
