Partial Listing of 81 Refugee Families
Authors: Edward Lining Manigault and Horry Frost Prioleau
I got this book so that I could see the genealogical listings of the Cordes Family (my 6x great grandmother was a Cordes who married a Whaley). After perusing through the Cordes family, I decided it might be to my advantage to go through each page to see if any Whaleys, Seabrooks, etc. happen to be in there as well. I struck gold when I went through the Deveaux family. Many of my ancestors are listed there. Hooray! Now I just need the rest of the registers to see the rest of the family. Great resource for about 300 years of South Carolina lineage.

A Place Called St. John's
The Story of John's, Edisto, Wadmalaw, Kiawah, and Seabrook Islands of South Carolina
Authors: Laylon Wayne Jordan and Elizabeth H. Stringfellow
This book begins with the geologic history of the region and then through the first findings of the land by England, France, and Spain. It has truly been a fascinating book, and gave me far more than I had hoped in terms of information on my family history from this area. Inside I found maps, pictures, diary entries, family genealogies, and other stories. There are too many to list here, but I will list a few:
1. Robert Seabrook was a merchant of County Bedford, England. He arrived in Charles Town in 1679. Arnoldus Vanderhorst, a merchant and planter of Charles Town and the Wando River region whose family came from Holland in 1694. John Calder was a doctor on Edisto Island in the 18th century (1700's)
2. About 1772, planter on Wadmalaw Island Frank Whaley donated two acres of land to build a sanctuary (possibly of the St. John's Parish church). Whaley was listed as a Patriot for a Voluntary Company of Edisto in 1776 along with others.
3. Sarah Jenkins (d/o Benjamin Jenkins who lived 1735-1782) married Archibald Whaley sometime in the mid 1700's.

Johns Island Presbyterian Church
It's People and Its Community from Colonial Beginnings to the Twenty-First Century
Author: Charles E. Raynal, PhD
This church is one of the oldest continuously active congregations of any denomination in North America. I found several things in this book:
1. W.S. Whaley, MD was elected in 1859 as a new elder.
2. June 12, 1870 the congregation met at the home or William S. Whaley in Legareville due to not having a church in which to meet after the war.
3. Dr. and Mrs. William S. Whaley and his daughters moved to Athens, GA in 1885. Dr. Whaley had been a ruling elder since Feb 1859.
4. Words about the deaths of Ephraim Mikell Seabrook and John L. Seabrook ( EM son)

Images of America: John's Island
Author: Connie Walpole Haynie
John's Island is the largest Sea Island (along the SC coast). There are archival photographs and plenty of information on the area. In it I found a map from 1826-1836 that shows Edward and William Whaley with plantations 26 and 19 respectively. Also, I found a listing of the Stono Scouts from the Civil War including J.S. Whaley as a Lieutenant and John B. Whaley as 4th Sergeant. A plat of summer homes in Legareville, a summer getaway destination for many of the planters in the area including Thomas Whaley in 1860. There is a picture of the Vanderhorst family in 1912. This was an interesting read and good for a few pictures.

Buried Alive! How 33 Miners Survived 69 Days
Author: Elaine Scott
This is a non-fiction account of the events that happened when an accident happened at the San Jose mine in the Atacama Desert of Chile. 33 Miners went down over 2300 feet below the surface of the earth for their shift on August 5, 2010. The roof of the shaft they were in collapsed. This left them stranded, but no one died. The foreman that day was Luis Urzua, who was well-respected and strong leader. I truly believe that all 33 people survived because of this gentleman. He moved everyone to a safe area and immediately took control of the situation. Without his leadership, many of the people may not have survived. Another theme that was touched upon was that working together to solve a problem can really help to save lives. The fact that NASA was called in on the solution was just neat! The story is overwhelmingly inspiring and I am very happy that I found the book. I have already come up with some neat activities to use along with the book. I will be using this next year in my classroom.

The Orphan of Ellis Island
Author: Elvira Woodruff
Main Characters: Dominic, Salvatore, Francesco, and Antonio
The story begins with Dominic as he goes on a class trip to visit the museum at Ellis Island. He is an orphan that has been moved a lot from family to family. While on the trip, he becomes frantic that his classmates will figure out that he is an orphan with no family so he runs off to hide. He falls asleep in the closet and awakens to find that it is night and he is locked in the museum. He becomes scared for being alone in empty place, but finds solace in the voices on the recorded phones. The last phone he picks up to listen is Italian just like he was told that he was. The comfort he finds in the voice calms him so much that he falls asleep at the phone. Suddenly, he finds himself on an adventure. He has "awakened" in Italy about 100 years earlier. There he meets three boys who are orphans just like him. What happens on this adventure?? Was is it just a dream?? You will have to read the book to find out for yourself. This is a very nice book with great details. I think I can find interesting ways to include this book in my classroom.

Boy of the Painted Cave
Author: Justin Denzel
Main Characters: Tao, Graybeard, Kala, Ram, Volt
This is a story about a boy in prehistoric times. It was a time of mammoths and ice ages. I have made the assumption that the story takes place in area of the Pyrenees Mountains called Lascaux. Tao was born to a young mother who died soon after he was born. He was born with one foot that was deformed, so his father left him to be eaten by hyenas (as they did with any baby that was ill or deformed). Kala, an older wise woman, rescued him and chose to raise him herself. At the age of twelve, he became more and more wanting to challenge the status quo: he wanted to be a cave painter. Only shamans could be a cave painter and he was far from being a shaman. He decided that all of the taboo and the bad spirits were not for him, so he left the village and found his own cave to be his own man. He befriended a starving wolf dog and together they hunted and lived. Along the way one day, he happened upon the shaman called Graybeard. He remembered him from all of the times he came to the village to celebrate the hunt and paint in the secret caves. The surprising friendship and the rest of the story will have to be experienced. I am definitely going to use this book with my sixth graders.

Guests
Author: Michael Dorris
Main Characters: Moss, his mother and father, Trouble, the tribe, the guests
The story is about a boy on the cusp of becoming a man. He is curious about things in an annoying way and is always concerned with life in relation to himself. He is upset that people won't answer his questions, especially about the guests. The time period is reminiscent of the Native Americans and the Pilgrims. The tribe is getting ready to host hungry guests for their annual fall feast. Moss is busy protesting his annoyance that the guests are coming and looking for someone in his family to help him understand why the guests are coming. In his haste, he announces that he is leaving for his alone trip today. No one tried to dissuade him, so he left. In meeting Trouble, a girl he heard about from the other side of the tribe, he became defiant and took off into the woods. His story is a good one. This is definitely a good book to read and learn from.

The Day of the Pelican
Author: Katherine Paterson
Main Characters: Meli, Mehmet, Baba and Mama Lleshi, Uncle Fadil
This book is about a Albanian family from Kosovo who must go through a very difficult set of trials. The setting begins in Kosovo in 1998 and continues through until Vermont, USA in 2001. Meli is twelve at the beginning of the book, and is the main character that tells the story. There are five children: Meli, her brother Mehmet, and her younger sister and two brothers. They persisted from being chased out of their family apartment to live in a camp in the mountains. They then moved to be with an uncle's family at his farm. In the middle of the night, the family must flee after being robbed to walking miles with no food or water. It was a hard journey, only to be rounded up and placed in a box car on a train to be sent out of the country...only Macedonia didn't want them. They eventually end up in a refugee camp until the NATO forces win over Serbian forces. The uncle and his family are allowed to return to the apartment once owned by Meli's parents, while the Lleshi's wait to get passage to America. One can only imagine the pain and hardship that this family endures to make it this far. Story culminates in a small town in Vermont where the Lleshis eventually settle. They work hard and make a life for themselves. And then Septermber 11th happens. As if this family had not been through enough already!
I am so happy that I was able to read this book. It really touched my heart.
I have changed focus in my classroom to teaching 6th grade Social Studies, so much of the reading I will be doing will be targeted to World Geography.
